Free birth chart

Birth chart calculator: your Sun, Moon and rising sign, in both zodiacs.

Enter your birth date, time and city below and the calculator gives your Sun, Moon and rising sign on both zodiacs. It also names your Vedic Rashi, nakshatra and Lagna, with no account needed.

Your birth chart, read two ways. You get your Sun, Moon and rising sign, your Vedic Rashi and nakshatra, and today read in both traditions.

A birth chart is the sky at the minute you were born, seen from where you were born. The Sun, Moon and rising sign are the three anchors; everything else in a reading hangs from them.

Western astrology counts the signs from the spring equinox; Vedic astrology counts them from the fixed stars, about 24 degrees back. Your chart is shown in both, because both are true and each is good at something the other is not. Vedic vs Western astrology, explained.

The result shows each point twice: on the Western, tropical zodiac and on the Vedic, sidereal one. It then reads today from your chart in both voices.

The birth time gives the rising sign and the houses. Without it, the Sun, Moon and Rashi still come out, and the reading says what it could not compute.

Worked example

One fixed example birth, run through the same engine as the calculator, so the page and the result can never disagree.

Example: born 14 May 1990 at 10:30 in Chennai, India. This is a fixed example birth, computed by the same engine as the calculator below. It is not a customer.

PointWestern (tropical)Vedic (sidereal)
SunTaurusMesha (Aries) 29°26′
MoonCapricornDhanu (Sagittarius) 17°39′, Purva Ashadha nakshatra, pada 2
Rising signCancerKarka (Cancer) 5°58′

On that date the ayanamsa, the gap between the two zodiacs, was 23.72°. So every Vedic position sits that far behind its Western one.

  • The sun moves back from Taurus to Aries.
  • The moon moves back from Capricorn to Sagittarius.
  • The rising sign stays in Cancer, because it sat more than 24° into the Western sign.
The method

How it is worked out

The calculator turns your birth date, time and place into one moment in universal time. It uses the birth place's time zone rules for that date. It computes the planets for that moment with an astronomical ephemeris.

Western signs are counted from the spring equinox. Vedic signs are the same positions minus the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today.

With no birth time, the chart is cast for midday and the rising sign is left out. The full method.

Honest limits

What this cannot tell you

  • The rising sign needs an accurate birth time and changes about every two hours. A time rounded to the hour can move it.
  • If the Moon changed sign on your birth day, the Moon sign needs the time too.
  • Charts made with another ayanamsa can differ by a degree or two. A different sign usually means a different birth time or date.
  • This is for reflection and cultural interest. It describes tendencies, does not predict events, and is not medical, legal or financial advice.

Do I need my birth time for a birth chart?

For the rising sign and the houses, yes. Without it the calculator still gives your Sun, Moon and Rashi, and leaves the rising sign out.

Why does my chart show two different Sun signs?

One is on the Western, tropical zodiac and one on the Vedic, sidereal zodiac. The two are about 24 degrees apart, so many planets move back one sign.
