What is a horoscope and how is it made?
The horoscope in a newspaper is not that map. It is a note for everyone born with the Sun in one sign, which is about one person in twelve. So it can only say things that are broadly true of a twelfth of the world.
Your own chart has your Sun, but also your Moon, your rising sign, and Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, each in its own sign and house. Two people with the same Sun sign can share almost nothing else, and their charts read very differently.
Two traditions are still in daily use. Western astrology counts the signs from the spring equinox and speaks in terms of character and seasons. Vedic, or Indian, astrology counts them from the fixed stars and speaks of timing: which planet's period you are in, and what it tends to bring.
Horoskope casts one chart and reads it both ways. The method page explains how the chart is computed and where each reading comes from.
