How Horoskope reads your chart
Horoskope computes one birth chart from your birth date, time and place with an astronomical ephemeris. It reads that chart through a Western lens and a Vedic lens. The chart comes first; AI, where used, writes last.
How a reading is made, in seven steps, with every number on this page read back from the code that computes it rather than typed here.
The chart
Your birth date, time and place are turned into one moment in universal time. The birth place's time zone rules for that date are applied. The positions of the Sun, Moon and planets for that moment come from an astronomical ephemeris, the astronomy-engine library.
The rising sign is computed from the same moment and the latitude and longitude of the birth place. If the birth time is unknown, the chart is cast for midday and the rising sign is left out rather than guessed.
Two zodiacs, one sky
The Western, tropical zodiac counts the signs from the spring equinox. The Vedic, sidereal zodiac counts them from the fixed stars. Each sidereal position is the tropical position minus the ayanamsa, the gap between the two zodiacs.
Today that gap is about 24.2 degrees. A planet in the first 24 degrees of a tropical sign therefore lands in the previous sidereal sign. That is roughly four times in five, which is why the Rashi usually lands one sign earlier than the Western Moon sign.
The ayanamsa
Horoskope uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, also called Chitrapaksha, as a linear approximation anchored at the year 2000. It starts from 23.85675 degrees and grows by the general precession rate of 50.2888 arc-seconds a year.
Across 1900 to 2100 it stays within about 0.02 degrees of the official Lahiri value. The official value follows small wobbles this model leaves out.
Nakshatras and the finer charts
The sidereal zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras, the Moon's mansions, each 13°20′ wide and split into four padas. The Moon's nakshatra sets where the dasha cycle starts.
From the birth chart, Horoskope computes 16 divisional charts, each cutting every sign into smaller parts for one area of life:

Finer still, each sign is divided into 150 named slivers of 12 arc-minutes, the nadiamsa, read with the Deva Keralam delineations. That layer needs the birth time to the minute.
Day, week, month and year
Each horizon is read from a different input, so a week is not a day stretched out. The day comes from the transiting Moon against your birth star. The week comes from a seven-day count of the sky.
The month comes from the Sun. The year comes from Jupiter, Saturn and the lunar nodes changing sign, and it runs from your birthday, not from January.
North Indian and South Indian charts
Vedic charts are drawn in two traditional layouts. The North Indian chart is a diamond. Its houses stay in fixed places, the signs move, and the rising sign sits at the top. The South Indian chart is a square grid: the signs stay in fixed places and the houses move.
A Free account draws your full chart both ways, and in both the Vedic and the Western voice.
What the AI does, and what it does not
The trust order is the answer first, the astrology second, and the AI last. Every position, date and window in the free reading on this site is computed by code from the chart, and no language model has any say in them. What a model does is put the result into sentences, after the arithmetic is finished. If it cannot be reached, the same code composes the words too.
In the app, the daily brief is normally written by a language model from the computed chart facts. The model is instructed to cite only positions present in the chart. It is told to make no guaranteed predictions, and none about death, disease or legal outcomes.
Ask, part of Pro, answers questions about your chart. Its answers are written to cite the chart factors behind them, drawing on a knowledge base of over 1,800 passages. That is an instruction to the model, not a guarantee on every answer.

Worked example
One fixed example birth, run through the same engine as the calculator, so the page and the result can never disagree.
Example: born 14 May 1990 at 10:30 in Chennai, India. A fixed example birth, not a customer.
On that date the ayanamsa was 23.72°. The Sun was in Taurus on the tropical zodiac and in Mesha (Aries) at 29°26′ on the sidereal one. The Moon was in Capricorn on the tropical zodiac and in Dhanu (Sagittarius) on the sidereal one, in Purva Ashadha nakshatra.
The same birth is worked through on the birth chart calculator and the Lagna calculator.
What this cannot tell you
- Horoskope is for reflection, cultural interest and entertainment. It describes tendencies, never certainties.
- It does not predict future events or guarantee outcomes, and it is not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
- The rising sign and the houses are only as good as the birth time. They change about every two hours, and near a sign boundary a few minutes can move them.
- The ayanamsa is a close approximation of Lahiri. Charts cast with another ayanamsa can differ by a degree or two.
- AI in the app is instructed to cite chart factors and to avoid predictions. Instructions are not guarantees, so read every answer as a reflection.
Related questions
Which ayanamsa does Horoskope use?
- Lahiri, also called Chitrapaksha, as a linear approximation anchored at the year 2000. It stays within about 0.02 degrees of the official Lahiri value from 1900 to 2100.
Does AI calculate my chart?
- No. The chart is computed from an astronomical ephemeris by fixed rules, and no language model touches a single position, date or window. A model writes the words that describe what was computed, and only after the computing is done. When it cannot be reached, the reading is composed by those same rules instead.
Why is my Vedic sign one sign earlier than my Western sign?
- The sidereal zodiac sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical one. A planet in the first 24 degrees of a tropical sign lands in the previous sidereal sign.
