What does Mercury retrograde mean?
Mercury retrograde is an optical effect. Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than Earth does, and about three times a year, as it passes between Earth and the Sun, it appears from Earth to slow, stop, and drift backwards against the stars for about three weeks. Nothing about the planet changes. The angle does.
- Mercury retrogrades a year
- 3Mercury retrogrades a year
- for each one
- 20 to 25 daysfor each one
- with the shadow either side
- About 8 weekswith the shadow either side
Astrology links Mercury with communication, travel, contracts, devices and the way we think things through. A retrograde is read as a time when those things want revisiting: messages cross, plans need a second look, and old conversations come back. The practical reading is not that everything breaks. It is that this is a better stretch for review than for launch.
The shadow is the stretch before and after, when Mercury covers the same degrees it will cross, or has just crossed, going backwards. Astrologers treat the pre-shadow as the time an issue first shows itself and the post-shadow as the time it resolves.
What to do, and what to avoid, during Mercury retrograde
Good for
- Revising, editing and finishing work already under way.
- Reconnecting with people and ideas from the past.
- Checking bookings, contracts and details twice.
- Backing up files and updating devices before the station.
Better to postpone, where you can
- Signing a contract you have not read closely.
- Launching something new that depends on clear communication.
- Buying a device or a car on impulse.
None of this is a rule. Life does not stop for three weeks, and a contract signed carefully on a retrograde day is still a careful contract. The tradition's advice comes down to: slow down, and read twice.
Mercury retrograde in Vedic astrology
Vedic astrology, Jyotish, uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees behind the Western one, so each retrograde falls partly or wholly in a different sign. The October 2026 retrograde is in Scorpio on the Western zodiac and in Tula (Libra) on the Vedic one.
Jyotish also reads retrograde differently. A retrograde, or vakri, planet is closer to Earth and brighter, and the classical texts treat it as strong, with extra cheshta bala (the strength of motion), rather than as broken. A vakri Budha, Mercury, is read as the mind turning back over its material: reconsidering, rethinking, returning. Timing in Jyotish rests far more on your dasha and the Moon's nakshatra than on Mercury's direction.
