How sign compatibility works

Western astrology reads a pair of signs from four facts. The element: fire and air feed each other, earth and water steady each other, and two signs of one element understand each other quickly. The mode: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs keep them going, mutable signs adapt, so two cardinal signs both want to lead and two fixed signs both dig in. The ruler, the planet that colours each sign. And the angle: how many signs apart the two sit on the wheel, which decides whether they share an element or a mode at all.

The Vedic view: two Moon signs, not two Sun signs

Vedic compatibility, kundli matching, compares the two Moons, not the two Suns, across eight kootas worth 36 points in all. Two of them depend on nothing but the two Moon signs: Bhakoot (7 points), which asks how far apart the signs are, and Graha Maitri (5 points), which asks whether the planets that rule them are friends.

That is why every pair page can state 12 of the 36 points for its two signs, computed by the same code as the calculator, and why it stops there. The other 24 depend on each Moon's nakshatra and exact degree, and on who is the bride and who the groom, which only two birth charts can supply.

  • A compatibility reading describes tendencies. It cannot predict whether a relationship will last.

By the classical rules, signs of the same element (four signs apart, a trine) and signs of complementary elements (fire with air, earth with water, two or six signs apart) find each other easiest. That describes a tendency, not any particular couple.

Which zodiac signs are least compatible?

No pairing is incompatible. Squares (three signs apart) and quincunxes (five apart) share the least, so they ask for the most adjustment, which is not the same as not working.

Why are there 78 sign pairs and not 144?

Twelve signs make 144 ordered pairs, but Aries with Leo is the same pairing as Leo with Aries. That leaves 66 pairs of different signs and 12 same-sign pairs, 78 in all. Each has one page, and the reversed address leads to it.

Is Vedic compatibility the same as Western compatibility?

No. Western compatibility compares Sun signs by element, mode and angle. Vedic kundli matching compares the two Moons, by sign and nakshatra, across eight kootas worth 36 points. The two can disagree: signs four apart are a trine in Western astrology, its easiest angle, while Bhakoot scores the same distance, 5/9, at zero.

Does my Sun sign decide who I should be with?
