How Many Gunas Should Match for Marriage?

Traditionally at least 18 of the 36 gunas should match for a marriage to be considered: 18 to 24 is acceptable, 25 to 32 very good, and above 32 excellent and rare. The score comes from eight tests, the Ashtakoota, which compare the two partners' Moons. Nadi and Bhakoot, the two heaviest tests, can flag a dosha that matters more than the total.

Key takeaways
  • 18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum. Horoskope labels 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 very good and above 32 excellent.
  • The eight kootas: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, Nadi 8.
  • Nadi dosha (0 of 8) and Bhakoot dosha (0 of 7) each have classical exceptions that cancel them.
  • The score compares the two Moons only. A full reading also looks at the 7th house, Venus, Mars and each person's dasha.

What is guna milan?

Guna milan, also called Ashtakoota milan or kundli matching, is the traditional Vedic test of compatibility for marriage. It compares the two partners' Moons, their Moon signs and birth nakshatras, across eight kootas, or tests, and adds up the points. The maximum is 36.

It is the first thing many families look at, and it is useful for that: a quick, shared measure of how the two Moons agree. It is also only a first look, and the best astrologers treat it that way. Kundli matching explained walks through the method.

Guna milan score chart: what your score means

The 36-point scale with the bands Horoskope's calculator uses: below 18 challenging, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 very good, above 32 excellent.

Below 18Traditionally not recommended without a closer lookChallenging
18 to 24AcceptableAcceptable
25 to 32Good to very goodVery good
33 to 36Excellent, and rareExcellent

Above 32 is rare, and a full 36 almost never happens, because some kootas pull against each other. Two people born in the same nakshatra, for example, share a nadi, so a pair that agrees on several tests can lose all 8 Nadi points.

The eight kootas and their points

Each koota's weight in the 36 points, from Varna at 1 to Nadi at 8. The heaviest two, Nadi and Bhakoot, are the ones that carry a dosha.
The Ashtakoota: eight tests, 36 points

Varna1Temperament and outlook, from the varna of each Moon sign
Vashya2Mutual influence: who leads and who follows
Tara3Birth-star compatibility, counted between the two nakshatras
Yoni4Instinct and intimacy, from each nakshatra's animal
Graha Maitri5Friendship between the rulers of the two Moon signs
Gana6Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
Bhakoot7How the two Moon signs sit to each other
Nadi8Constitution: Adi, Madhya or Antya nadi

Four of the tests (Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi, 21 points) come from the birth nakshatras and four (Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, 15 points) from the Moon signs. The 27 nakshatras lists each nakshatra's gana.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi is the heaviest koota, at 8 points. Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis, Adi, Madhya or Antya, and two partners with the same nadi score 0 of 8: that is Nadi dosha. The tradition links it with health and children, which is why families ask about it first.

The classical texts also give exceptions that cancel it. Horoskope's calculator checks three: the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, the same nakshatra with different padas, and the same nakshatra falling in different signs.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot, worth 7 points, looks at how the two Moon signs sit relative to each other. Three pairings score 0: signs 2 and 12 apart, 5 and 9 apart, and 6 and 8 apart, counted from each Moon. The classical exceptions Horoskope checks are when both Moon signs share a ruling planet, and when the two ruling planets are mutual friends.

Is a low guna score a reason not to marry?

Not on its own. The score is built from the two Moons alone. It does not see the 7th house of either chart, the state of Venus and Mars, Mangal dosha compared between the two, or the dasha each person will be running when the marriage begins. A 20 with two strong 7th houses can read better than a 30 with a weak one, and a family that stops at the number is using a first look as a final answer.

It is not a prediction either. A score is a traditional measure of agreement between two charts, not a forecast of whether a marriage will be happy or last.

Enter both birth dates, times and places in the free kundli matching calculator. It gives the full 36-point score with all eight kootas, flags Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, and says whether a classical exception applies. With Pro, or the one-time match unlock, Horoskope reads what the score cannot see: the 7th houses, Venus and Jupiter, Mangal dosha compared, and the periods each person is in.

Honest limits

What this cannot tell you

  • The score compares the two Moons only. It cannot describe the rest of either chart.
  • Schools differ slightly in how some kootas are scored, so two calculators can disagree by a point or two.
  • A score is a traditional measure of agreement. It does not predict whether a marriage will be happy or last.
  • Astrology here is for reflection and cultural interest. It describes tendencies, does not predict events, and is not medical, legal or financial advice.

Related questions

Is 18 gunas good for marriage?

18 is the traditional minimum for a match to be considered, and Horoskope labels 18 to 24 acceptable. Look at Nadi and Bhakoot, and at the rest of both charts, before reading much into the number.

Is 36 out of 36 gunas possible?

In theory, yes, but it is extremely rare, because several kootas pull against each other. Anything above 32 is already rare and excellent.

Can a marriage go ahead with Nadi dosha?

Many families proceed when a classical exception applies, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different padas. The calculator shows whether one applies.

What if the guna score is below 18?

Traditionally it calls for a closer look, not an automatic no. The score sees only the two Moons; the 7th houses, Venus, Mars and the dasha periods can change the picture.

Do gunas matter in a love marriage?

That is for the couple and their families to decide. The score is a traditional measure of how two Moons agree, a good conversation starter, and it does not predict whether a marriage will be happy.
