- Signs describe how; planets describe what; houses describe where in your life.
- The houses are counted from the rising sign, so they need your birth time.
- The angular houses (1, 4, 7 and 10) are the most prominent.
- An empty house is not a missing part of life, just a quieter one.
- Vedic astrology calls the houses bhavas and groups them as kendras, trikonas and dusthanas.
What are houses in astrology?
A birth chart has three layers. The planets are the actors; the signs are the costumes, the style each planet wears; and the houses are the stage, the area of life where each planet does its work. Mars in the 10th house pushes in your career; Mars in the 4th pushes at home.

Houses in Vedic astrology: the bhavas
Jyotish calls the houses bhavas and counts them as whole signs from the Lagna, the rising sign: the whole sign that is rising is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. It groups them by what they do. The kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the pillars of the chart, the trikonas (1, 5, 9) the houses of fortune and merit, and the dusthanas (6, 8, 12) the houses of difficulty, which the tradition reads as the places where effort is required.
- 1, 4, 7 and 10: the pillars
- 4 kendras1, 4, 7 and 10: the pillars
- 1, 5 and 9: fortune and merit
- 3 trikonas1, 5 and 9: fortune and merit
- 6, 8 and 12: where effort is asked
- 3 dusthanas6, 8 and 12: where effort is asked
How houses are calculated: whole sign, Placidus and more
Every house system starts from the rising sign; they differ in how they divide the rest. Whole-sign houses, used in Vedic astrology and in Horoskope's Western readings, make each house exactly one sign. Placidus, popular in modern Western astrology, divides the sky by time and gives houses of unequal size. Equal houses cut the circle into twelve 30-degree houses from the rising degree. So the same planet can sit in different houses in two charts of the same birth, which is a difference of method, not an error.
What does an empty house mean?
Most charts have several empty houses, because there are twelve houses and only ten or so planets and points. An empty house is not a missing part of life; it is a quieter one, and its ruling planet, the ruler of the sign on it, shows where its business is handled. A 7th house with no planets still describes your partnerships through its sign and that sign's ruler.
