What is my Rashi?
Your Rashi is your Moon sign on the sidereal zodiac, the sign an Indian horoscope means by 'your sign'. Enter your birth date, time and place below to find it, with your nakshatra.
Your Rashi is the Vedic Moon sign, the one an Indian horoscope means by 'your sign'. It needs your birth date and place; the time makes it exact.
The twelve rashis are the same twelve signs, counted from the fixed stars instead of from the equinox. Their Sanskrit names are listed below.
A daily rashifal is counted from your Rashi, not from your Sun sign. That is why a Rashi needs the birth date and place, and ideally the time.
Your rashi's lord, and the nakshatra your Moon sits in, are what a daily rashifal is computed from. The free reading shows both, and reads today from your rashi in the classical voice.
To see them, switch the result to 'I know my chart' for the lord and the nakshatra, and to the Vedic voice for today's rashifal.

Worked example
One fixed example birth, run through the same engine as the calculator, so the page and the result can never disagree.
Example: born 14 May 1990 at 10:30 in Chennai, India. This is a fixed example birth, computed by the same engine as the calculator below. It is not a customer.
- Rashi
- Dhanu (Sagittarius), ruled by Guru (Jupiter).
- Nakshatra
- Purva Ashadha, pada 2.
- Western Sun sign
- Taurus.
An Indian horoscope for this person reads from Dhanu. A Western column would file the same person under Taurus, because it only knows the Sun.
How it is worked out
The calculator turns your birth date, time and place into one moment in universal time. It uses the birth place's time zone rules for that date. It computes the planets for that moment with an astronomical ephemeris.
Western signs are counted from the spring equinox. Vedic signs are the same positions minus the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today. The Rashi is the sidereal sign of the Moon, and the nakshatra is which of 27 parts of 13°20′ it sits in.
With no birth time, the chart is cast for midday and the rising sign is left out. The full method.
What this cannot tell you
- A Rashi cannot be worked out from a Sun sign. It needs the birth date, and on a day the Moon changes sign, the time.
- Family charts cast with another ayanamsa can differ by a degree or two, which matters only near a sign boundary.
- This is for reflection and cultural interest. It describes tendencies, does not predict events, and is not medical, legal or financial advice.
Related questions
Is Rashi based on the Sun or the Moon?
- On the Moon. The Rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth, on the sidereal zodiac.
Can I find my Rashi from my date of birth only?
- Usually, because the Moon stays in a sign for about two and a half days. On the day it changes sign, you need the birth time.
