Kundli milan

Kundli matching: the 36-point score for two birth charts.

Kundli matching for marriage compares the Moons of two birth charts through eight tests, the Ashtakoota, for a score out of 36. Tradition treats 18 or more as acceptable and above 24 as good. Enter both birth details below for the free score.

The count

What the eight tests ask

The eight kootas ask practical questions in old language. Do the temperaments agree? Do the two Moons sit in friendly signs? Are the constitutions compatible? The two heaviest are Nadi at 8 points and Bhakoot at 7.

Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7) carry a dosha when they fail, and classical rules cancel either in some cases. That cancellation is the first thing a family should ask about, and the first thing a score alone cannot answer. How the 36 points work, test by test.

Tradition treats 18 or more as acceptable and above 24 as good. Above 32 is rare. This calculator labels 25 to 32 very good and above 32 excellent.

Beyond the number

Inside Horoskope, the match continues

The free score is the classical count. With Pro, or the one-time match unlock ($6.99), the app reads the part a number cannot say: how stable each koota's points are, the two seventh houses, Mars and Mangal dosha compared, the periods running for both, and a report link the families can share.

In the app, a Free account gets the same score with all eight factors, and whether the score turns on the birth time. Each person's Rashi and nakshatra are what the eight tests compare.

Worked example

Two fixed example births, scored by the same engine as the form below, so the page carries a real result rather than only a promise of one.

Example: one person born 14 May 1990 at 10:30 in Chennai, India. The other born 3 November 1988 at 18:45 in Mumbai, India. Fixed example births, not customers.

Bhakoot dosha is present here but cancelled by a classical exception: Moon-sign lords Jupiter and Sun are mutual friends. So the free result does not flag it.

The method

How it is worked out

Each birth is cast from its date, time and place, and the sidereal Moon of each chart is found. The eight kootas compare the two Moons' signs and nakshatras. They are Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, worth 1 to 8 points.

This calculator labels a total under 18 challenging, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 very good and above 32 excellent. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are flagged only when present and not cancelled by a classical exception.

Honest limits

What this cannot tell you

  • The score compares only the two Moons. It does not look at the seventh houses, Venus and Mars, Mangal dosha or the periods each person is in.
  • A score is a traditional measure of agreement. It does not predict whether a marriage will be happy or last.
  • The free result gives each koota's points. The written explanation of each koota is part of the full reading in the app.
  • This is for reflection and cultural interest, and is not legal, medical or financial advice.

Is 18 out of 36 a good kundli match?

Yes, 18 is the traditional line for an acceptable match. Tradition treats 18 or more as acceptable and above 24 as good. Above 32 is rare. This calculator labels 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 very good and above 32 excellent.

Do I need both birth times?

The birth time sharpens the Moon's position, which matters when a Moon sits near the edge of a sign or nakshatra. The date and place alone often give the same score.
