What is my rising sign (Lagna)?
Your rising sign, or Lagna, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It needs your exact birth time and place, because it changes about every two hours.
The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes every two hours, so it needs your birth time and place.
The rising sign, also called the ascendant, marks the first house of your chart. Every other house is counted from it. It is the face your chart turns to the world.
The same planets in the same signs are read differently for different rising signs. That is why astrologers ask for the birth time.
The result gives the rising sign on both zodiacs. Your Sun, Moon and Rashi appear alongside, and they do not depend on the time.

Worked example
One fixed example birth, run through the same engine as the calculator, so the page and the result can never disagree.
Example: born 14 May 1990 at 10:30 in Chennai, India. This is a fixed example birth, computed by the same engine as the calculator below. It is not a customer.
The same birth, computed two hours earlier and two hours later, to show how fast the rising sign moves:
| Birth time | Lagna (Vedic) | Rising sign (Western) |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Mithuna (Gemini) 8°42′ | Cancer |
| 10:30 (the example) | Karka (Cancer) 5°58′ | Cancer |
| 12:30 | Simha (Leo) 4°01′ | Leo |
Each of the three times gives a different Lagna. The Sun, Moon and Rashi are the same at all three.
How it is worked out
The calculator turns your birth date, time and place into one moment in universal time. It uses the birth place's time zone rules for that date. It computes the planets for that moment with an astronomical ephemeris.
Western signs are counted from the spring equinox. Vedic signs are the same positions minus the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today. The rising sign is computed from the birth moment and the latitude and longitude of the birth place.
With no birth time, the chart is cast for midday and the rising sign is left out. The full method.
What this cannot tell you
- An uncertain birth time gives an uncertain Lagna. If a birth record lists the time, use it.
- Near a sign boundary, a few minutes can change the Lagna.
- This is for reflection and cultural interest. It describes tendencies, does not predict events, and is not medical, legal or financial advice.
Related questions
Is the Lagna the same as the ascendant?
- Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit name for the ascendant, the rising sign. Vedic charts measure it on the sidereal zodiac.
What if I do not know my birth time?
- Then the Lagna cannot be found. If you do not know your time, the reading says so and gives you the Sun, Moon and Rashi, which do not depend on it. The hospital's record of the birth often has the time to the minute, and some birth certificates print it.
