Zodiac Compatibility Chart: Every Sign Pair Explained

Each square is the angle between two Sun signs on the zodiac wheel. Astrology reads those angles, the aspects, the same way it reads angles between planets: some flow, some pull and some push. It is a sign-level view, so it describes the general climate between two people, not the two people.

  Instant recognition: the same drives and the same blind spots. Easy understanding, and a risk of doubling the weak points.

• Neighbours (semi-sextile)

  1 sign apart

  Next-door signs of different elements and styles. Mild interest, some mutual learning and little natural overlap.

• Friends (sextile)

  2 signs apart

  Complementary elements, fire with air and earth with water. Easy conversation, shared projects and a light, friendly spark.

• Friction (square)

  3 signs apart

  Different elements and clashing priorities. Tension that can become attraction and growth, if both are willing to work at it.

• Harmony (trine)

  4 signs apart

  The same element. The most natural ease in the zodiac: you like the same pace and want similar things.

• Adjustment (quincunx)

  5 signs apart

  Nothing in common by element or style. Fascinating or baffling, and it asks for constant adjustment.

• Opposites (opposition)

  6 signs apart

  Across the wheel from each other: complementary, magnetic and balancing, with a pull between two ways of living.

The twelve signs fall into four elements of three signs each. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) acts; earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) builds; air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) thinks and connects; water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feels. Same-element pairs understand each other's pace. Fire and air feed each other, and so do earth and water; fire with water and air with earth are the classic mismatches, which is not the same as impossible.

Vedic astrology does not compare Sun signs at all. It compares the two Moons, the Moon signs (Rashis) and birth nakshatras, in the eight tests of Ashtakoota milan. One of those tests, Bhakoot, looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are, and three distances count against a match:

Notice the disagreement: signs five apart are a trine, the easiest Western pairing, and a Bhakoot dosha in Vedic astrology. The two traditions measure different things, and the classical exceptions (both Moon signs ruled by the same planet, or by mutual friends) cancel the dosha. A Sun-sign chart treats every Aries alike, and no two Aries are alike. What decides how two people actually get on is the rest of each chart: the two Moons, which govern emotional rhythm; Venus and Mars, which describe how each loves and pursues; and the 7th house of partnership. A Leo and a Scorpio with harmonious Moons can do better than two Leos whose Moons clash.
